Right now, most of Indianapolis’ power is produced by fossil fuels. Indianapolis still gets much of its electricity from AES Indiana's Petersburg Super Polluter Coal Plant, located 125 miles Southwest of Indianapolis. This plant is the largest water polluter in the state of Indiana, and one of the worst polluters in the nation - releasing toxic pollution, and damaging the climate.
At the end of 2022, AES Indiana announced its intentions to end coal burning by 2025, and replace that power with mainly gas. We are opposed to AES doubling down on fossil fuels and want to see more solar in their short-term plans.
Our community came together to ensure that AES Indiana stopped burning coal at its Harding Street coal plant on Indianapolis’ southside. Since our victory, we have succeeded in stopping unreasonable electric bill increases and secured the retirement of half of the Petersburg coal plant. This year, we are telling AES Indiana that we want the utility to get on a path towards 100% renewable energy by retiring the Petersburg Super Polluter coal plant by 2028.
