Duke Energy Indiana is the largest of Indiana’s investor-owned utility companies. Duke owns and operates some of the dirtiest, most expensive, climate-damaging coal plants in the U.S., including their Gibson Super Polluter Coal Plant and Edwardsport Plant. Duke currently gets the majority of its energy from fossil fuels and just a fraction from renewable energy.
We’re organizing to move Duke Energy beyond fossil fuels to affordable, renewable energy for all. This year, we’re telling Duke to stop burning away our futures and to stop perpetuating the climate emergency by retiring their existing coal plants before 2030.
Duke Energy Indiana claims to be “moving beyond coal” in recent advertising. Yet Duke's latest 20-year energy plan relies on burning coal with minimal investments in renewable energy, including plans to build two massive fracked gas plants. The time is now to hold Duke accountable and move our utility beyond fossil fuels to affordable, renewable energy for all.
Duke owns and operates some of the most expensive and dirtiest coal-burning plants in the United States, right here in Indiana, with five coal-burning units at Gibson, and two at Cayuga, in addition to the Edwardsport plant. Its Gallagher Plant is planned to retire by 2022. Duke currently gets 90% of its energy from coal, and less than 5% from renewables.
They keep so much coal around that they literally burn it just to get rid of it.
