We’re Moving Beyond Coal and Gas

We’re Moving Beyond Coal and Gas

Across America, the Beyond Coal campaign is replacing coal and gas with clean energy. We’re mobilizing grassroots activists to advocate for meaningful energy changes in their communities, including retiring coal plants, preventing new fossil fuel plants from being built, and working to stop the expansion of fracked gas.

We will stop dirty energy from being used in buildings, stop fossil fuel exports, and build a world that doesn’t rely on these polluting and dangerous fossil fuels.

Our Goals

We want to close all US coal plants. We’re more than halfway there!

We are in the midst of an historic transition: we are working toward a future where all communities…

We want to replace dirty coal and fracked gas with clean solutions that restore frontline communities.

We support solutions like wind, solar, storage, and geothermal and seek justice for people affected…

Beyond Coal, By The Numbers

DIRTY POWER PLANTS RETIRED
The plants counted here are "planned retirements" plants that have retired or proposed to retire with a specific retirement date.

DIRTY UNITS RETIRED
Each coal-burning plant is made up of a specific number of units. Since not all coal plants are the same size, the number tracked here shows the total number of coal units in the U.S. that have been announced for retirement.

DIRTY MEGAWATTS RETIRED
The average polluting coal power plant is 840MW, which supplies dirty power to over 400,000 homes per year.

CLEAN ENERGY MEGAWATTS INSTALLED
As old coal plants retire, we're working to make sure that clean energy like wind and solar will step in to replace them, providing many new jobs for American workers.

Moving Beyond Gas, By The Numbers

The Sierra Club is working to stop the expansion of fracked gas into the power sector, buildings, and exports, and to ultimately phase out this polluting and dangerous fossil fuel. Building out new fracked gas infrastructure would lock the country into a fossil fuel commitment for decades to come, with devastating consequences for our communities and the climate. We can’t let that happen, which is why we’ve launched a comprehensive effort to stop this buildout and end our reliance on fracked gas.
Since the start of 2020
Dirty Gas Plant Capacity Defeated
60,022 MW
From delayed or defeated
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Facilities
Estimated Avoided Emissions
2,093 MMT CO2e/year
Equivalent to the annual emissions from 442 million gasoline-powered cars.*
Avoided Capacity
47 billion cubic feet (BCF)/day
From delayed or defeated
Pipelines
Estimated Avoided Emissions
418 million metric tons carbon dioxide equivalent
Equivalent to the annual emissions from 99 million gasoline-powered cars.*
Avoided Pipeline
1,792 miles
This is the distance from Washington DC all the way to Albuquerque, NM.
Avoided Capacity
11 BCF/day
*Avoided emissions are the emissions that the extraction, processing and transportation, and use of the gas would create (i.e., full gas cycle emissions of the gas the pipelines would transport). Includes methane and carbon emissions.
